<fb:like href='http://houstonrehabdetox.com/drug-rehab-directory/top-intervention-models/' layout='default' show_faces='false' width='300' action='like' colorscheme='light' />

The presence of multiple intervention models provides options for helping a loved one in Houston understand the need to get into alcohol or drug rehab. Understanding these models and choosing the best one for your situation will help you provide the best support for your struggling family member or friend.

The Johnson Model for Houston Interventions

The Johnson Model uses a strategy that includes the following:

Surprising the addict who is the target of the intervention

Limiting the timeframe of the intervention to typically no more than 2 hours

Confronting the addict during the intervention

While it may seem that this model involves a conversation and does not require preparation, participants should first meet with a professional interventionists to learn more about making this form of intervention the most effective. Interventionists can help with preparation and can help Houston residents understand more about addiction, codependency and enabling behaviors. Intervention specialists who do not agree with this approach feel that it is too confrontational and that the addict is pushed into getting treatment, but this model remains the most often seen in the media.

Understanding the Systemic Family Intervention Model

The Systemic Family Intervention (SFI) model focuses on education and invitation. During a two-day educational workshop loved ones, close friends, family members and the addict learn about the following:

Addiction

Codependency

Treatment

Treatment option

Recovery

This session is interactive and gives all participating Houston residents the opportunity to learn and explore in a non-confrontational manner. After the workshop the addict is invited to seek treatment. Advocates of this model believe in leading the addict towards recovery rather than pushing. There are no surprises, no hiding, no sneaking, no deception and no dishonesty.

Motivational Interviewing as Part of a Houston Addiction Intervention

Motivational interviewing determines the addict’s willingness to change. A counselor will use different strategies in an effort to guide the addict towards seeking treatment. For some Houston addicts the Johnson Model may be the right course of action, while others will benefit more from the SFI model. Motivational interviewing is unique in that a trained and professional counselor helps determine the most effective way to manage change. If you do not wish to speak with a counselor prior to an intervention, consider enlisting the help of a professional interventionist. Even if you choose to hold the intervention without outside help, the interventionist will be able to answer your questions and give you insights based on his or her experiences.

Houston Addiction Intervention Help

Intervention is an effective strategy for helping an addicted loved one, but it requires thought, planning and professional advice. Call our toll-free helpline to learn more about these and other top intervention models. We are available 24 hours a day, so please call now.

Early drug users took marijuana, peyote, opium and other drugs recreationally, as medicine or as parts of religious or cultural ceremonies. Addiction occurred, but little was known about the dangers of drug use.

Early American Use of and Addiction to Opium

The dangers of opium addiction were some of the first to be understood and treated. In 1810 morphine was developed and used to treat soldiers suffering bodily pain or injury. Morphine was used throughout the civil war and was readily available in the U.S. Doctors began to notice patients with signs of addiction, although addiction was not recognized as the disease we now know it to be.

Early treatment of morphine addiction involved the use of heroin. Heroin was administered to ease withdrawal symptoms, much as Houston residents may now use Suboxone and buprenorphine to combat heroin addiction. After the introduction of heroin new addictions began to appear. It wasn’t until 1920 that these drugs were declared illegal. Awareness of the dangers of drug use began to increase, but the illegal drug trade continued.

Modern Drug Addiction Treatment for Houston Residents

Addiction was not seen as a disease until the mid-1900s. Until then individuals addicted to a drug like heroin were treated like criminals rather than individuals grappling with a disease. They were often punished for their use by the legal system or put in asylums. Attitudes towards addiction have changed greatly, and addiction is now treated with the help of the following resources:

Education. Drug use and addiction is talked about and discussed in schools, homes and other open forums in Houston. Learning about addiction and the side effects of drug use decreases the potential for drug abuse.

Readily available treatment centers. Public and private treatment facilities are located all across the country. Helplines are easily accessible and free to callers, and help struggling Houston residents find the recovery options that best suit their needs.

Detox. During rehab withdrawal symptoms are closely monitored by medical professionals to ensure the health and safety of the patient.

Therapy. Therapy sessions help recovering drug users understand their addiction, move forward and build a positive and healthy life.

Unfortunately a portion of the misunderstandings and negative stigma surrounding addiction is still prevalent. Houston residents continue to move forward in their understanding of addiction and recovery, and recovery success rates continue to grow.

Houston drug addicts often become so focused on their drug abuse that they neglect their loved ones and responsibilities. They may lie to cover up their addictive behavior, which can erode trust and cause further tension.

As addiction grows, anger and hurt tends to grow among loved ones. This naturally damages communication. It becomes harder to discuss the addiction without anger and pain clouding the conversation. It’s easy to fall into patterns of blame and accusation for any Houston family. Unfortunately tense conversations about addiction are often counterproductive. Many addicts often deny their problems and eagerly embrace any excuse to become defensive or blame others. You can you’re your Houston loved one accept her need for treatment by listening to what she has to say.

How to Communicate about Addiction with Houston Residents

You can take any of the following steps to communicate better with an addicted loved one:

Get help for your own emotional needs. This may mean seeing a counselor or attending a support group. Your feelings of hurt and anger are understandable, but they can obstruct your goal of treatment if you do not handle them constructively.

Learn what you can about addiction. Addiction is a brain disease. Although addicted loved ones are responsible for their behavior, addiction nevertheless drives them to almost uncontrollable acts. Understanding this can help you develop compassion.

Learn about the stages of change. People who understand change can listen for clues as to how far along a loved one might be. With this information, you will know how best to help your Houston loved one move to the next level.

Build on your loved one’s strengths and sources of pride. Listen for clues to what he likes most about himself and what gives him self-satisfaction. Offer positive reinforcement for these acts whenever possible.

Listen for clues that your loved one may need help for a co-occurring condition, such as anxiety or depression. It’s best to address addictions and co-occurring conditions simultaneously, but some people are unwilling to deal with one or both problems. If patients do not address these problems together, the chances of recovery are reduced.

Consider hiring an interventionist. When communication is bogged down and becoming counterproductive, outside help can be very beneficial for any Houston family.

<fb:like href='http://houstonrehabdetox.com/drug-treatment/is-my-drug-addiction-my-fault/' layout='default' show_faces='false' width='300' action='like' colorscheme='light' />

Drug users in Houston experience a range of emotions surrounding drug use. These emotions may include the following:

Guilt. Users may perceive that others are approaching them with judgment, anger, sadness, or disappointment. They will feel guilty for causing such feelings in others and will feel guilty for being unable to stop hurting loved ones.

Shame. The label of “addict” comes with a negative stigma, and users may try to hide their addictions.

Worthlessness. Being dependent on a substance confuses one’s feelings of self-worth. Users may not feel worthy of support and help for recovery.

Emotions and feelings related to addiction are not a user’s fault. However taking responsibility and getting help to end drug use is entirely up to the user. Addiction is not your fault, but continued use and consequences are.

Addiction Affects Houston Residents’ Behavior

Examples of poor decisions made while using include the following:

Stealing money or property

Endangering the lives of others

Earning money or drugs through sexual acts or favors

Losing his/her job

Spending all of his/her money

Using other drugs

While these behaviors are influenced by addiction, they still involve a series of personal choices. Addiction is a disease and not a choice, but the choices Houston residents make during addiction are theirs. Finding appropriate resources for recovery and taking action to end addiction are all under the control of an addicted individual. You are not to blame for your addiction, but you are to blame for not reaching out for help.

You can address your addiction and behavior through treatment, but you may want to take advantage of counseling to learn about guilt. There are also counselors who specialize in family counseling for families affected by addiction.

What Houston Residents Can Do about Guilt Related to Addiction

Too much guilt from your actions under the influence can be crippling. Extreme guilt can engender apathy or self-destructive thoughts, but some guilt and shame can be useful. It is normal to wish you could erase certain actions you have committed, but if guilt and shame are used appropriately they may inspire and encourage you to address your addiction. If you want to execute less shameful acts, a good way to start is to get sober. Houston residents cannot erase their past, but with help they can behave in more respectable ways in the future.

How Counseling Helps Houston Residents Find Relief from Guilt

There is specific counseling available for any specific addiction. If an intervention is needed, there are professional interventionists who can unite the voice and message of an addict’s family and friends. If you live in Houston and need family counseling after an addiction treatment program, there are counselors who can help mold a supportive environment for both the recovering addict and those around the addict. For those who are struggling with guilt over actions committed while intoxicated, there is counseling for you too whether you are the addict or a bystander who was affected. You can help avoid relapse by seeking wise counsel for your guilt. With professional help you can understand the origin of guilt and how it can lead to further destruction. In this way, you can harness your guilt and overcome it before it controls you.

Addiction Help for Houston Residents

The encouragement and support that many recovering addicts receive from others during treatment is greatly beneficial. One way that recovering addicts in Houston can continue to reinforce their recovery is by giving back to the treatment community and encouraging other addicts who are in treatment.

Drug-free Environments for Recovering Addicts from Houston

Taking time to help others who are in treatment can give you the opportunity to remain in a drug-free environment. Just as with halfway houses or sober-living homes, a rehab facility can offer recovering addicts in Houston the chance to ease into their new addiction-free lives. This may present an especially attractive option to those who would otherwise have to face many challenges and temptations in their home environment.

Recovering Addicts from Houston Can Give Advice to Other Addicts

When helping others in treatment, you can provide advice and encouragement based on your own personal experience. Other recovering addicts may be more likely to listen to this advice since it comes from someone in a similar situation, as opposed to a therapist or counselor. Your opinion can become valued and respected by recovering addicts who recognize your honesty and openness.

Another way that Houston residents can help other recovering addicts is by becoming a paid therapeutic assistant. As an assistant, you can live in a drug-free environment and encourage others, while also earning a living. A steady source of income can help you feel secure in your newfound recovery. One way to pursue this opportunity is to talk with a rehab admissions counselor and ask how you can become involved as a therapeutic assistant.

Being an Addiction Recovery Sponsor in Houston

Becoming an addiction recovery sponsor can be a personal way to relate to other addicts in Houston. 12-step programs and group therapies often employ one-on-one attention because the sponsor’s personal experiences can have a profound effect on those who are in treatment. Through phone calls, encouraging words and support meetings, you can help lead recovering addicts through challenges you may have already faced in the recovery process.

Volunteering with organizations other than treatment centers can help give you a sense of purpose. Animal shelters, soup kitchens and hospitals are all types of places in Houston that may accept volunteers. Maintaining healthy hobbies and activities is also a good way to stay busy and avoid relapse.

Find Addiction Help for Houston Residents

If you or a loved one is struggling with addiction in Houston, please call our toll-free helpline now. Our counselors are available 24 hours a day to answer your questions about addiction and recovery. Please call now.

<fb:like href='http://houstonrehabdetox.com/drug-treatment/what-is-the-most-dangerous-drug/' layout='default' show_faces='false' width='300' action='like' colorscheme='light' />

All drugs are dangerous in one way or another. There are almost unlimited direct and indirect consequences of using any drug, especially recreationally. Some drugs can lead to direct consequences such as death from overdose, while others are not capable of causing overdose death directly but may contribute to accidental death or injury. Most drugs, especially when used regularly for an extended period, can lead to numerous physical, mental and emotional problems for Houston residents.

Dangers of Opiate Drug Use in Houston

If you had to pick one class of drugs that is the most dangerous in terms of direct consequences, it would be opiate drugs. This category includes heroin and morphine as well as prescription painkillers like Lortab, Percocet and OxyContin. Opiates are capable of causing death directly from overdose and side effects. Additionally opiates impair motor skills and reaction times, making it dangerous to drive while under their influence. Opiates are extremely addictive, and detox from opiates must be medically supervised to avoid any serious complications in Houston residents.

Dangers of Sedative Abuse in Houston

The sedative/hypnotic class of drugs includes alcohol, barbiturates and benzodiazepines such as Xanax, Ambien and Klonopin. Alcohol impairs judgment and motor skills and can contribute to accidental death or injury to the user and others in Houston. Alcohol is highly addictive and can cause serious health problems with long-term use. Benzodiazepines (benzos) cause serious negative side effects. They are extremely addictive and short-term medical use due to the likelihood of addiction. Long-term regular use of benzos can produce a severe addiction and intense and even dangerous withdrawal symptoms when use is stopped.

Detoxing from any sedative can be dangerous. Sedatives produce severe dependencies that will induce dangerous or even life-threatening withdrawal symptoms when use is stopped. Detox from any sedative must be conducted under medical supervision to ensure the patient’s safety.

Dangers of Misusing Stimulants

Stimulants include the following:

Cocaine

Amphetamine

Methamphetamine

Prescription stimulants like Ritalin

The primary direct danger of stimulant use is the possibility of death from cardiac arrest. Stimulants are highly addictive, and long-term use can cause severe psychiatric problems such as paranoia, hallucinations and psychosis.

Dangers of “Soft Drugs” Such as Marijuana

Psychoactive drugs such as marijuana, LSD and psilocybin (“magic mushrooms”) are often considered “soft” drugs, because they do not produce physical dependency, serious physical side effects or withdrawal symptoms when use is stopped. This does not mean that use of these drugs does not involve risk for Houston residents. All of these drugs cause altered states of consciousness that make it dangerous to function in the real world.

One of the resources that an increasing number of people are taking advantage of is the use of a professional interventionist. The goal of an addiction interventionist is to get a person to voluntarily enter an addiction treatment program. To reach this goal, the people involved in the intervention attempt to show the addict the following:

The extent that the addiction has damaged the addict’s life and the lives of those he loves

Support to get into rehab and to live a life in recovery

Qualifications of a Professional Interventionist

At present, there are no state or federal requirements, licensing, or accreditations that a professional interventionist must hold before going into practice. However, in most cases, a professional interventionist is as follows:

A licensed therapist or psychologist

A recovering addict who is passionate about helping others

A certified addiction counselor with experience working in treatment programs

How to Hold an Intervention in Houston

Listed below is a checklist of what Houston residents need to do when preparing for and conducting an intervention. After looking at the list, you can determine whether you feel that you can be successful in these activities without outside assistance. You can also identify the parts of the intervention that you feel require outside assistance, and thereafter seek a professional interventionist to only assist with those components. Finally, you can choose to turn the entire process over to an interventionist because you feel he or she will be better suited to complete the job successfully.

Your intervention checklist may include the following:

Identify members of the intervention team – people who have direct experience with the Houston addict, but who also have the ability to remain calm, focused, and constructive during the intervention

Develop the intervention plan which includes location, time of day, participant list, and objectives of the intervention

Assign roles and responsibilities to members of the intervention team to handle the following tasks:

Learn about the addict’s abused drug so they can speak intelligently about its effects and determine how the drug affects the addict

Gather information from friends, family members, and colleagues about the addict’s behaviors, personality, and receptiveness for treatment

Seek out treatment options, make contact with the facility, and find out about pre-admission requirements

Discuss the intervention plan with the team to identify who is speaking, in what order, and what the key messages are

Keep the meeting organized, flowing smoothly, and encourage participation

Keep the focus on allowing the addict to hear what is being said and helping him work towards help

Take the addict to the treatment facility to help him get settled in

This list only provides the key activities necessary for an intervention; use this to determine whether a professional interventionist is the right choice for you.

<fb:like href='http://houstonrehabdetox.com/detoxification/what-can-i-do-if-treatment-isn%e2%80%99t-available-locally/' layout='default' show_faces='false' width='300' action='like' colorscheme='light' />

Treatment for your addiction isn’t always available close to home where you’d like it to be. If treatment isn’t available near you, do not give up on your search; instead, expand your limits so that you can find a treatment center that can help you. It doesn’t matter if a treatment center is 10 miles or 1,000 miles away from home as long as it helps you heal. Sometimes it can be a good thing to attend treatment away from home, since it gives you a fresh start. Houston addicts can recover from addiction and we can help.

Why Attend Treatment away from Houston?

When people suggest attending out of state treatment, Houston users may feel uncomfortable, but out-of-state treatment can be quite effective for addiction rehab. Staying close to home may leave you exposed to the same influences, such as a bad group of friends that drove you to addiction in the first place. Getting away from your routine for a while as you attend treatment will allow you to find yourself and get a fresh start as you heal from your addiction. If you stay home and attend local treatment, you may find yourself falling back in with the same group of Houston friends right after treatment. But, after a while away from them you’ll find new friends and be ready to succeed when you leave treatment.

Receive the Best Treatment Possible

Also, local treatment may not offer the same quality of care that you can receive in an out-of-state facility. Deciding where to receive your treatment should focus on where you can give yourself the best chance at success instead of convenience or comfort. If you can get the quality of care needed locally, then that’s great, but don’t accept substandard treatment just because it’s close to your Houston home. The treatment you receive during rehab will be a deciding factor in whether or not you can stay clean, so be sure you’re getting the best treatment possible.

Find Addiction Treatment for Houston Residents

If you live in Houston and are looking for a rehab center to offer you the best care available, we can help. Call our toll-free helpline today so we can tell you what to look for in a rehab center, and we’ll direct you to a treatment center that will help you get your life turned around. We’re here to speak with you 24 hours a day, letting you know if your health insurance will cover part or all of your rehab, and answering any questions you have about addiction or addiction treatment. Call us today and ask us about anything you’re concerned about.

<fb:like href='http://houstonrehabdetox.com/drug-treatment/what-are-my-responsibilities-to-my-addicted-friend/' layout='default' show_faces='false' width='300' action='like' colorscheme='light' />

Being a true friend involves sticking together through thick and thin. However, sometimes a friend may not know how far is too far when it comes to helping with addiction. Addiction is a disease, and without treatment a Houston resident will only get sicker until the addiction has completely destroyed or literally taken her life. It may seem unlikely at the moment, but addiction will even destroy relationships with friends because addicts will prioritize maintaining the addiction over anything or anyone else.

Friendship involves caring about another individual, and that includes doing the right thing even if it may be uncomfortable. Addiction is a progressive condition, meaning that it will worsen until it completely consumes every aspect of a Houston addict’s life. His health, career, relationships and finances will all eventually be damaged by the addiction. If the people closest to the addict do not care enough to find help, who will? When a friend is struggling with addiction, it is absolutely your responsibility to get him the help that he cannot get himself. Wouldn’t you want your Houston friends to help you if the roles were reversed?

How to Help a Houston Addict

The ultimate goal of helping an addicted friend is getting her into treatment. Addiction should be seen as a condition: it cannot be cured, only managed or treated. Putting an end to addiction does not mean just quitting a drug or alcohol, it requires the person re-wire her brain so she will avoid using in the future. When Houston addict denies her condition, or is not likely to seek treatment, a friend may have to find alternative ways to get help. This may require a Houston friend to talk to the addict’s family, a rehab professional or hold in intervention. Friends must not enable the addiction. They must take a stand and let their friends know that abusive behavior will not be acceptable any longer. It may sound harsh, but it will prevent addicts from downplaying the issue or agreeing to get help and never taking action.

Houston Addiction Help

If someone you love in Houston is addicted to drugs or alcohol, you have a right to be concerned. Addiction is a terrible disease that can be detrimental to all aspects of an addict’s life. You may be experiencing many feelings like anger, confusion and worry, which is why it is important for you to know that you are not alone. Addiction is a disease that affects millions and there are many people who can help.

By calling our toll-free helpline, you can speak directly to a rehab counselor who will be happy to assist you through this difficult time. Our counselors are available 24 hours a day to talk to you about addiction treatment, intervention services or answer any other questions you may have. Speaking to someone who understands what you are going through can allow you to make the right decisions for your loved one. To learn more, please call us today.
